Ellie: the Hiker Princess

Here is a story I just wrote, based on (of course) the fairy tale Cinderella. Enjoy!

“Oh, Stepmother, must I polish your hiking shoes?” asked nineteen-year-old Ellie Cinder. “I just polished them two days ago.”
“Yes, Ellie. Polish the shoes immediately.” Stepmother Eva commanded.
“Ellie, you must also polish my hiking boots.” Priscilla, Ellie’s stepsister told her haughtily.
“Ellie, my binoculars are scratchy on the lenses. Will you clean them off?” asked Lillian, Ellie’s other stepsister. You see, Ellie’s mother died when Ellie was just a little thing, and her father had remarried to Eva, who had two daughters. Ellie’s father was a good man-but he was away a lot, on business, and didn’t have much time for his daughter. Eva, Lillian, and Priscilla picked on Ellie because her father wasn’t there to defend her.
Ellie got right to work on the tasks her stepmother and stepsisters asked her. She was a quiet, gentle girl. She dreamed of going on a long hike with the handsome young prince of England, Gabriel, who was an excellent hiker. Ellie, Stepmother Eva, and her stepsisters Lillian and Priscilla really liked to hike, and they did it often, since they lived on the bottom of a mountain. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
“Cinder residence,” Ellie opened the door and greeted the man who was outside.
“I was sent by the Prince Gabriel, and he sent this message for you.” The messenger handed her an envelope.
“Have a nice day!” Ellie walked him out the door. She opened the envelope. It said:

All of the young ladies of this house are invited to a hike up the mountain with Prince Gabriel. He is looking for that special someone, and his majesty wants the best hiker to be his wife. Please come at:

Ellie was very excited—she went to find Stepmother Eva, and Priscilla and Lillian. Just think—she might get to see Prince Gabriel himself tomorrow afternoon! Once she read them the letter…….
“Oh mom, we surely must go! What a wonderful thing—a hike with Prince Gabriel!” Priscilla fell into her bean bag chair, eyelashes fluttering.
“Oh, yes! We surely will be chosen to be his wife! Just think, mom!” Lillian swooned.
“It will be so much fun!” Ellie clasped her hands together.
“You may only go, Ellie, if you clean the whole house and get our hiking things ready before tomorrow.” Eva raised an eyebrow.
“Oh, surely I will get it done!” Ellie was a bit disappointed at her task—but still wanted to go on the hike. She dreamt of it all day. The housekeepers at the place felt sorry for her, because she didn’t have proper hiking pants and shirt, and surely not a pair of nice hiking boots like Eva, Lillian, and Priscilla.
“We must get those things for her,” Mrs. Hatch, the cook told all of the housekeepers, after they had been discussing it for awhile.
“Yes!” They all agreed. They completed their tasks, then went shopping for nice things.
“Oh yes, these things will be perfect!” They put the hiking equipment on Ellie’s bed for her to be surprised. Later that night……..
“Oh my stars! Where on earth did this awesome hiking equipment come from?” Ellie gasped. She put the things on and pretended she was hiking up the mountain with Prince Gabriel. The next morning, she completed all of her tasks. When it was just about time for them to leave…….
“Stepmother, I am done with all the things you asked me to do.” Ellie informed.
“All of it?” Eva wondered, surprised.
“Ellie! I must have that hiking helmet!” Lillian snatched the helmet off of her.
“Give those boots to me! That is too nice for a freak like you.” Priscilla turned up her nose and forced Ellie to sit down so she could take the boots off of her.
“No!” Ellie cried. Eva only smirked and led the snotty girls out of the door. Ellie ran to the trampoline to cry.
“This had to happen to me!” Ellie sulked and pouted. Her chance to meet Prince Gabriel was ruined! Just ruined! Suddenly, dust shook up from the ground.
“Ellie, hon, whatever is the matter???” asked a voice Ellie didn’t recognize. She turned around and saw a beautiful woman, about thirty, dressed in very expensive hiking gear, smiling at her, waving her binoculars around.
“Who are you?” Ellie asked.
“I am, of course, your Fairy Hike-mother! I understand your stepsisters ruined your chance to go to the hike. How distressing! Well, I believe I can help you. Just turn around, and I will have things ready for you in a jiffy.”
Ellie was simply amazed! In just seconds, hiking gear appeared on her, complete with binoculars, and a helmet!
“Thank you, fairy hike-mother!” Ellie cried, and hugged the woman.
“No prob! Now there is one thing I must tell you. Once the clock strikes six, your regular clothing will appear! Don’t stay too long, mind you. Now, have a great time! Be back before six!” Fairy hike-mother patted her on the back.
“Thank, you, thank you!” Ellie ran off to the place where the hike would start. Her step mother and step sisters didn’t even recognize her when they got there. The hike started, and Ellie was having a grand time! Prince Gabriel even asked Ellie to walk next to him! Ellie’s heart skipped a beat when he told her that. They were chatting, laughing, and having a great time, when all of a sudden, Ellie’s clothes changed! It was six fifteen! She gasped and ran down the mountain, hiking boots still on. About halfway down, one of her boots fell off, but she didn’t care. She just kept on running. Prince Gabriel was very much in love with the girl and came after her, wondering what made her take off! When he found her slipper, he held it and wept. This was the girl, he thought, that he might wish to marry! He decreed that all of the girls in the land must try on this boot, and whoever fit must be Ellie. When the prince and his noblemen got to the Cinders’ house, Eva purposely locked Ellie in her room.
“No!” Ellie cried, knowing that the boot was hers. She heard Priscilla and Lillian trying on the boot, but it was much too small for their clumsy feet. Mrs. Hatch, the maid, decided to unlock her, because she was fond of her. Ellie flew down the stairs, and came to the living room.
“The boot is mine!” She cried. The men let her try on the boot, and it fit perfectly, as she knew.
“Ellie, would you marry me? You will become a princess!” Prince Gabriel asked Ellie and presented her with a diamond ring.
“Yes!” Ellie cried.
Prince Gabriel and Ellie were married that next month, and they lived happily ever after, hiking up the mountain into the sunset.
